Hornbill Asian Market near former Hy-Vee set to address food access gaps

WB Real Estate Team represent Hornbill Asian Market in their Downtown Cedar Rapids expansion.

Hornbill Asian Market is establishing a new location at 1445 First Ave. SE in Cedar Rapids, near the now-closed Hy-Vee store, in a move that’s hoped to help address growing concerns over food access in the area.

According to a release from Skogman Commercial Real Estate, Hornbill Asian Market’s new retail space will offer a variety of fresh produce, specialty groceries, and authentic Asian products, “meeting both practical and cultural food needs.”

The store’s arrival is expected to complement temporary food access programs implemented by the city and local nonprofits, such as mobile food pantries and free delivery services, after the Hy-Vee store at 1556 First Ave. NE closed in June.

The release didn’t indicate a timeframe for opening the new market.

City and economic development officials have spent the last several months seeking to replace the Hy-Vee store, located in one of the city’s most economically challenged neighborhoods.

“We are thrilled to expand and support the Cedar Rapids community at a time when quality food options are most needed,” a Hornbill representative said in the release. “This new location allows us to better serve our customers and become a part of this vibrant neighborhood.”

The 11,237-square-foot facility, built in 2019, is situated in a high-traffic location along First Avenue, near downtown Cedar Rapids, according to the release. It has access to public transit, ample parking and easy access for residents.

Founded in Waterloo in 2014, Hornbill Asian Market “aims to promote diversity and meet community needs through reliable food access and cultural enrichment,” a Hornbill representative said.

Hornbill Asian Market also has locations in Dubuque and in St. Joseph, Missouri, according to the company’s website.

John Beardsworth and Steve White with Skogman Commercial, represented Hornbill in securing the lease for the building.
